And you know what? That’s ok. I’m not here to judge.

Living with paralysis is probably one of the hardest things any human being can endure. So if Daniel James, a British rugby player, wanted to commit suicide because he couldn’t deal with it, it’s totally his perogitive.

Last week this entire story came to light. It made (and still makes) my heart break. I’m not sad because he commited suicide. I’m not even sad because he felt hopeless. I’m sad because he was in this situation in the first place. Why hasn’t a cure for paralysis been found yet?? If we can put rovers on Mars, put men on the Moon, and clone sheep, why in the FUCK can’t we heal tiny areas of spinal cords that have been torn, nicked, or bruised?

I honor the memory of Daniel James. I know his pain all too well. This life never gets easier. It all boils down to how much you want to live, and what makes life for YOU worth living.

Question of the day: How much do you love life?

For me, family, friends, love, good food, music, movies, traveling and seeing the world (even from a wheelchair) make my life worthwhile. I’m not ready to call it quits, but then again I wasn’t a hugely talented rugby player on the brink of hitting the big time before my injury. That’s a lot to lose.

RIP Daniel James. I honestly don’t blame you.

And you know, with the holiday season right around the corner (sort of, but it will be here sooner than you think), I can’t think of a better site to buy the perfect holiday dress.

And remember, if you sit 24/7 empire waists, longer hems (short dresses just won’t work unless you don’t care if you have an “Oopsies!” Britney Spears moment), and anything that accentuates the shoulders, bust, and neck are your best bet.

You simply must take into account that clothes, ie dresses, WILL look different in a sitting position.

If you think you’re just seeing things, and think that everyone (including guys) are wearing neck scarves, well you’re not seeing things. They’re a trend on steroids right now. The scarf can be print or solid, and it’s usually made out of a longer, more dense piece of cotton.

Naturally, Target has them by the dozen, and they’re all fantabulous.

I’m not really a big “quote” person. They can be tired, trite, and well I’ll just say it – lame.

But! (but, but, but), I just discovered a phenomenal quote thanks to a mass email sent to us freelancers from my editor. It encompasses my entire life post-injury, what I strive to do everyday, and most importantly – what I hope to further through my articles, podcasts, and blogs. The quote comes from the recently passed disability rights activist and lawyer, Harriet McBryde Johnson.

“Living our lives openly and without shame is a revolutionary act.”

This is one of the most perfectly worded expressions I’ve ever read. What I do, and what I want women with disabilities to do everywhere, is to live their lives as if they weren’t disabled; to NOT let society’s expectations of who they *should* be to mold their lives.

Some people just can’t handle it when we’re “out in the public eye” being sexual beings, getting married, having babies, looking hawt (omgz the horror!), and basically relishing the woman inside of us. They think our disability should somehow make us not want to or not be able to do these things anymore. But, we live in the 21st century. The time for a revolution has come! We are the last minority to get treated equally in regards to the whole “Hey, we’re human too!” situation, and that needs to change.

When will the time come when people no longer come up to me and congragulate me for being out when I’m buying a burrito at Chipotle? When will they stop patronizing me/being shocked for living my life like a “normal” 28 year old? Just because I’m sitting down does not make me that vastly different, nor does it somehow magically siphon away my hormones.

I should really get this quote tattooed across my face. I’d probably piss people off, and that’d be awesome.
