“The Orphanage”
Guillermo Del Toro’s latest film “The Orphanage” (“El Orfanato”), is an amazing horror film that literally INVENTS a new genre of horror. And the best part, it features characters with disabilities. A very interesting, relevant movie for me (and I’m sure for you too). The reason I believe it invents a new genre within the genre of horror, is because you actually cry tears of joy for the “scary bad people” at the end of the film. Talk about a mindfuck. Nordstrom’s Makeup Event
Today was what I like to refer as “Crazy Makeover Day” over at Nordstrom’s at the Mall of America. Every counter in the store was giving free makeovers. This of course is an obvious promotional tool, but I also noticed that the bosses of the makeup artist’s were assessing their work as they made-up the hordes of women looking for a free look. So maybe they use it as a “testing day” for their artists too (?). A friend of mine, and yours truly, had 1:30pm appointments with the lovely Laura Mercier ladies. Did you know that DC Comics had their character, Batgirl (Batman’s daughter, Barbara Gordon), become paralyzed after being shot by her arch-enemy, The Joker, who then changed her identity to “Oracle”…a sexy paraplegic, computer genius, who ran her team of able-bodied ass-kicking proteges from her home in Gotham’s Clocktower? And the coolest part? What Do You Appreciate More…Now?
How has your disability influenced you in such a way, that you appreciate certain things more than “everyone else?” It’s funny. For me – over all these crazy years of having a SCI – “The Little Things Tiff Appreciates” list has grown exponentially. Since When Did Touch Lamps Go Out of Style?
There’s something about touch lamps that makes this C6 quad a happy girl. I mean, all you gotta do is touch them – ANYWHERE – and then voila! “…and then there was light!” Anyways, I went and bought myself a very cool modern touch lamp from IKEA last week (it’s in my living room next to my couch), and it’s increased my happiness level by at least 50% (for now…of course being human, that’ll eventually change).
